What This Test Checks For
Both hormones are made by the pituitary gland and communicate with the ovaries or testes to regulate reproduction. FSH (Follicle-Stimulating Hormone) drives egg development in women and sperm production in men.
LH (Luteinizing Hormone) triggers ovulation in women and stimulates testosterone production in men.
Understanding High FSH Levels in Women
A high FSH result usually means your pituitary gland is working harder to stimulate your ovaries—often a sign of declining ovarian reserve, perimenopause, or menopause itself. It can also appear in some cases of PCOS. A high result on its own isn't a diagnosis; it's typically interpreted alongside your age, cycle history, and other hormone levels.
What Preparation Is Necessary Before an LH Blood Draw?
No special preparation is needed—no fasting required.
The one thing that matters is cycle timing if you're testing for fertility evaluation specifically: Day 2 or 3 of your cycle gives the standard, most interpretable baseline.
If you're testing for menopause or general symptoms rather than fertility, timing is far less critical.

You've Got Your Results—Now What?
Your numbers will land securely in your private online portal, and they belong entirely to you.
But a list of lab values and reference ranges doesn't automatically tell you what to do next. If any of your levels come back outside the normal range, we can connect you with an affordable, optional telehealth consultation—the provider walks through your results in plain language, answers your questions, and gives you a clear next step for anything out of range.
