Which TB Test Do You Need in Tucson?

Choosing the right TB test comes down to three questions:

Can you come back for a second visit? Have you ever had a BCG vaccine, and how fast do you need to be cleared?

If returning 48 to 72 hours after placement is easy, the PPD skin test is the simplest and most economical option — just note that we do not place skin tests on Thursdays, since the reading would come due on a closed weekend. If a second trip is hard to fit in, the QuantiFERON Gold blood test settles everything in a single draw.

If you have ever received a BCG vaccine, a skin test can read as a false positive. QuantiFERON Gold is not affected by BCG, so it gives you a cleaner, more reliable result.

If your job, school, or program specifically calls for the 2-step PPD—common across many healthcare, caregiving, and program entries because it can reveal an older infection a single test might overlook—plan ahead, since the two placements are

 one to three weeks apart.

When a deadline is tight, QuantiFERON Gold is the fastest route to a documented result: no return visit, with lab results back in 48 to 72 hours.

Please note: PPD skin tests are not placed on Thursdays. The reading has to happen 48 to 72 hours after placement, and a Thursday placement would come due on the weekend when we are closed.

This applies to the single PPD and to both steps of the 2-step test. The QuantiFERON Gold blood test has no return reading, so it can be done any business day, including Thursday.

TB Testing FAQ

What does a positive TB test mean? A positive result means you have likely been exposed to TB at some point — not that you have active, contagious tuberculosis. Most positives are latent, meaning the bacteria are inactive. The next step is follow-up with a provider, usually a chest X-ray, to confirm whether any active infection is present.

Do I have to come back to get my skin test read? Yes — that return visit is required for a PPD. The injection has to be examined and measured by our clinical staff 48 to 72 hours after placement; a skin test read too early or too late isn't valid. If a single visit suits your schedule better, the QuantiFERON Gold blood test gives you clearance with no return trip at all.

How long is a TB test good for? Most employers, schools, and programs accept TB clearance for one year from the test date, though some settings require testing more often and others accept a recent baseline. Check what your specific form or policy states. If you need a fresh test or an annual renewal, we can run whichever version your requirement calls for.

Do you take insurance for TB testing? No — Quick Test is a direct-pay lab, so we do not bill insurance. That keeps pricing flat and your visit fast. We also accept FSA/HSA.
