Understanding the PPD Skin Test (Mantoux Method)
The PPD skin test is still the most commonly used tuberculosis screening among Pima County healthcare students and public-sector workers.
With this classic method, a certified clinician places a small intradermal injection of tuberculin purified protein derivative just under the skin of your inner forearm.
For an accurate reading, that same clinician must physically examine the injection site 48 to 72 hours afterward to measure any local reaction.

TB Testing FAQ
Can I walk in, or do I need to schedule? Both work. You're welcome to come into our Tucson lab on West St. Mary's Road any weekday for a PPD placement or a QuantiFERON Gold draw — or reserve a time online if you'd rather. One scheduling tip for the skin test: plan your placement so the 48-to-72-hour reading lands on a day we're open, since the read has to happen inside that window.
Do I have to come back to get my skin test read? Yes — that return visit is required for a PPD. The injection has to be examined and measured by our clinical staff 48 to 72 hours after placement; a skin test read too early or too late isn't valid. If a single visit suits your schedule better, the QuantiFERON Gold blood test gives you clearance with no return trip at all.
How long is my TB clearance good for? Most schools and employers treat a TB clearance as valid for one year, then ask for an annual update. When yours is coming due, walk back in for a quick renewal — usually a 1-step PPD or a single QuantiFERON draw — and we'll get your updated certificate turned around fast.
What's the difference between a 1-step and a 2-step TB test — and which does my nursing program need? A 1-step is a single placement and reading. A 2-step adds a second placement and reading one to three weeks later, which catches a weaker immune response the first test can miss.
