What Does the QuantiFERON Gold Test Detect?
The QuantiFERON Gold TB test — also called QFT or TB-Gold — is a modern blood test that shows whether you've been exposed to tuberculosis bacteria. It needs only one quick 15-minute visit, with no return trip for a reading. There's no appointment and no physician's order required to walk into our Tucson lab.
We draw your blood in minutes and send your confidential results to your secure online portal within 48 to 72 hours.

Why People Choose the TB Gold Blood Test
QuantiFERON Gold is the go-to TB test for healthcare workers, nursing students, and anyone racing a clearance deadline. The whole thing is a single blood draw — no coming back two to three days later for a skin reading.
Your results reach you through the secure online portal within 48 to 72 hours.
If you've ever had the BCG vaccine, QuantiFERON Gold sidesteps the false-positive problem the skin test can create. It also drops the placement injection, the return appointment, and the risk of missing the 48-to-72-hour reading window — which, if missed, forces you to start the entire skin-test process over.
How the QuantiFERON Gold Test Works
QuantiFERON Gold is an IGRA — an Interferon-Gamma Release Assay. It gauges how your immune system responds to tiny fragments of the TB bacteria under controlled lab conditions.
Here's what happens once your blood is drawn:
-
Your sample is divided across three tubes. One holds proteins unique to TB bacteria, one holds a general immune-response trigger, and one is left empty as the control.
-
The lab measures interferon-gamma — the immune chemical your white blood cells release when they recognize an infection they've met before.
-
The three tubes are compared. If your cells put out noticeably more interferon-gamma against the TB proteins than against the control, the result reads positive, meaning your body has encountered TB bacteria at some point.
In adults with healthy immune systems, the test pinpoints exposure with roughly 95% sensitivity and 98% specificity. Because it keys on your response to TB-specific proteins rather than the broader reaction a BCG vaccine provokes, it delivers a far more reliable reading for anyone with a BCG history.

TB QuantiFERON Gold FAQ
How is QuantiFERON Gold different from the TB skin test? The skin test (PPD) takes two trips — one to place the injection, another 48 to 72 hours later to have it read. QuantiFERON Gold is finished in a single visit: we draw one tube of blood and send it to the lab, with results posted to your portal in 48 to 72 hours. It also isn't thrown off by a BCG vaccination, which is a common source of false positives on the skin test.
Do I need to prepare or fast before the blood draw? No special prep and no fasting — just walk in. The visit takes about 15 minutes from check-in through the draw, and you're free to go the moment it's done; there's nothing to come back for.
Will my school or employer accept QuantiFERON instead of a PPD? In nearly all cases, yes — QuantiFERON Gold is widely recognized for healthcare, nursing program, and employment clearance, and many programs actually prefer it because it's a single visit with no missed-reading risk. If your program specifies one method, check its requirement; otherwise the blood test satisfies the same TB clearance the skin test does.
